Ken Eichstaedt, a professional water systems engineer, will give a brief update on North Marin Water District projects that will affect West Marin.
Leslie Alden from Act Now Bay Area (formerly Drawdown Marin) is working to phase out fossil fuels in the Bay Area. She will speak about existing solutions that make it easy for everyone to take climate action—at home, at work, and in our neighborhoods. The impact of climate disruption in the San Francisco region, including devastating fires and sea level rise, puts billions of dollars at risk, affecting all nine counties, 101 cities and towns, and especially the 7.8 million people who call this region home.
Act Now Bay Area is leading the Regional 2030 Climate Challenge - a campaign to dramatically reduce the San Francisco Bay Area's greenhouse gas emissions and reach ambitious 2030 climate goals at speed and scale.
Before founding Act Now Bay Area, Leslie worked for the County of Marin for over 13 years on policy and community engagement, bringing a multi-disciplinary approach emphasizing community involvement to move climate action and sustainability policies forward. Projects included two of the nation's breakthrough climate initiatives: Marin Clean Energy, the first Community Choice Energy program in California and the first in the US focused exclusively on renewable energy, and the 2015 "Marin Here-Now-Us Project", a partnership between Marin County, Climate Access, and FEMA, which tested a virtual reality tool designed to engage the community on sea level rise. These two projects led to dramatic GHG emissions reduction, increased public awareness, significant participation by decision-makers, and encouraged innovation. She co-founded the Marin Climate Action Network in 2017, which developed and helped launch Drawdown Marin (now MarinCAN), the precursor to Act Now Bay Area.
Leslie holds a degree in education and public policy from UC Berkeley and a Public Leadership Credential from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. She has served on several non-profit boards and is currently on the Board of Directors of Climate Action Now, a start-up in Silicon Valley. She sees hope and peril in the coming decades and, borrowing from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., recognizes "the fierce urgency of now."
